And what better place to have a party in August than a wide, rambling plain within reach of the clouds, or of the moon and the stars after dusk? Pian del Monte – literally ” mountain plain” – saw the 43rd edition of the “Festa in Amicizia” this year, one of the most popular events of the Taro Valley summer, which attracts thousands from all over the province, as well as from neighboring Tuscany and Liguria. An occasion during which the community comes merrily together whilst in direct contact with nature, given the peaceful, unspoilt scenery of the location.
It is a festa for all the family, since entertainment is provided for children by the organisers, allowing adults a little well-deserved relax. Some enjoy their own picnics from home, whilst others prefer to relish the many specialities on the menu. Amongst the typical dishes offered are; savoury tarts – potato, “erbe” o rice, pasta all’amatriciana, polenta served with IGP Borgotaro mushroom sauce or with gorgonzola cheese, stewed wild boar with polenta, barbecued pork, kebabs and sausages, chips, and to top it all off – home-made cakes. In the evening, a delicious paella is available for all.
Every year a lottery assures prizes galore, the field games begin around 2pm, and from 4pm onwards, the party really gets into the swing of things when the band “Gli Amici della Notte” starts playing the typical waltz, polka and tango rhythms. The dance floor fills up in a jiffy with couples flying around and having fun, and when the band switches to golden oldies and modern songs, all the youngsters are up there too, in an atmosphere of sheer merriment! And of course, when Giancarlo (otherwise known as Mannie!) – singer and guitarist of the group and co-owner of Villa Tre Angeli – leads the show, fun and laughter are guaranteed!
During the afternoon, crowds arrive and sit at the many tables and benches set out, sharing a bottle of wine or beer while chatting and listening to the music, just having a relaxing time with friends or family. Some young people even make an adventure out of it, going up the evening before and sleeping in tents….in fact, it is not unusual to come across snoring sleepers in the midst of all the noise – the ones who began partying the night before and carried on until they dropped! It’s definitely safe to say that a good time is always had by all!
So here is yet another excellent reason to come visit the area of Bedonia, and get in on all the excitement!
