There are over one hundred ruined or intact castles dotted throughout the Parma province. While many were abandoned in Renaissance times, others were converted into palatial country mansions.
Castell’Arquato is a very picturesque hill town in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy. At the top of the town is the castle with the village spilling gently down the hill below the castle. Near the castle is a Romanesque church and abbey and great views of the surrounding countryside.

Torrechiara, the best preserved castle in the region is almost unchanged since the 15th century, when it was built by Pier Maria Rossi upon the ruins of a fortress house 80 meters above the valley floor.

Castello di Bardi sits on a sheer outcrop of red jasper. The fort looms imperiously over the burgh and valley below. With its sturdy curtain wall, embattled parapet-walks, guard towers, and castle keep, the fort is a fine example of medieval siege architecture (13th – 14th century).
